Honey, It’s Been Way Too Long

I know, I know…it’s been a long time. Too long, really.

I needed a break, that much is certain. Time to reboot and recharge. Try new recipes, stockpile some posts, but more than anything a chance to cook with no purpose, or not cook at all, and an opportunity to step away from my schedule. After all, blogging is a hobby for me but it’s one that I take seriously and to which I am dedicated–let’s just say 40 weeks a year. I understand that many of you enjoyed a similar luxury and I hope that you are returning to reality with a clear head.

I took away from my experience two solid objectives. The first, is to maintain the ever-so-slightly slowed pace that I have adopted. This means that when there is nothing to do, I just may do nothing at all. If my kids schedules conflict so egregiously, someone may actually miss an activity. Our life on the East moves so much faster than anywhere else and I realize that by living here I cannot get off the treadmill. But by slowing down just a pinch–a half step–I can keep some of the West with me and help my family do the same.

My second objective is to see more grey. Those who know me, stop laughing, you’ll choke on your coffee. I will always have opinions, strong ones at that, but I am trying to take a closer look at that space in between. The grey area gets a bad rap but it’s in that space that people come together and new opportunities arise. I think that without realizing it (or maybe just without sharing their secret) this is something that people who move more slowly consider. It makes them kinder and more open. Clearly, I’ve drank the Kool-Aid and am encouraging you to do the same.

These are just thoughts but since we meet in this personal space, I thought I would share. Now, I know you are thinking, “Enough already, let’s get to the recipe; we’ve been waiting long enough!” I am sorry to disappoint but that will come next week. I’m still on summer holiday, after all 🙂 Plus, I’ve had a hard time deciding which recipe would be my first so this takes the pressure off.

Though, I will share a slight obsession that has grown over these past two months. It’s the honey drizzle. As you may remember, I drizzled honey on that egg and sausage sandwich I wrote about in May. Well, this summer, I ate more of those sandwiches than I can count and drizzled honey on every last one. Then I started drizzling honey on other things, too–some old and others new:

  • toasted English muffin with peanut butter
  • cheese, of all varieties but especially blue
  • apples, of course
  • oatmeal
  • Greek yogurt
  • goat cheese toast
  • in a tumbler of bourbon with some freshly squeezed lemon juice, enjoyed hot or cold
  • and my new favorite, extraordinarily ripe tomatoes with olive oil, sea salt, and you guessed it, honey!

So take out your honey bear or better yet, a jar of local honey and start drizzling. If you are so inspired, share the ways that you use honey in the Comment section below.

Enjoy this unofficial last day of summer and I’ll be back next week. Until then.
