Hockey Brownies
Consider this a belated Mother’s Day gift. Here’s a brownie “recipe” that truly couldn’t be more popular or more simple (there’s not an element made “from scratch”). These Hockey Brownies will be devoured at any gathering you bring them to, making you the superstar with a secret, which is just how easy they are to prepare.
Before I get to the “recipe,” I’ll explain the name. This sweet treat was shared with me by a fellow hockey mom and good friend. They were called “Slutty Brownies” (presumably because you might do just about anything for a bite of one?) which was how I introduced them to my family. My kids didn’t question the name or ask for an explanation of the reference (likely because their mouths were full) but as soon as I heard them talking about the brownies with their friends I realized that the name had to go. Having my kids long for slutty anything…well, let’s just say that didn’t feel right. So, I’ve renamed them Hockey Brownies the double entendre being a nod to my hockey friend and a reference to the puck-like Oreos that are nestled between the batters.
Don’t feel guilty about the simplicity or decadence, just bask in some well-deserved glory and watch Mother’s Day become Mother’s Week.
NOTE: I’ve read recipes for these brownies where the baker makes the brownie and cookie dough from scratch. As a person who generally doesn’t like brownie mix or refrigerated cookie dough, I can appreciate their efforts but feel that these Hockey Brownies somehow work without all that extra effort. The ease is a huge part of the sweet reward.
- 2 16.5 oz rolls of Nestle Toll House refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough (I buy the extra large roll if I can find it or else use almost two regular sized rolls)
- 1 box of brownie mix
- 1 package of Oreos (you will use about half the package)
- Preheat the oven to 350F.
- Press the cookie dough into the bottom of a 9"x12" baking pan. Use your fingers to ensure that it s evenly distributed.
- Place Oreos onto cookie dough in neat rows. Lightly press the Oreos but try not to break them!
- Make the brownie batter according to the package directions.
- Pour the batter evenly over the Oreos and cookie dough.
- Place the baking pan into the oven and cook according to the package directions.
- When the timer rings, test to make sure that the brownies are fully cooked, you may have to cook up to 5 minutes more to account for the additional volume.
- Allow to cool before cutting into neat squares.
- If you don't mind less than perfect squares, you may want to eat these brownies warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Consider yourself warned!
