Which came first?
The blog or the concept? For me, and I’m guessing/hoping some others out there, it’s the blog. If I were half a generation younger I suppose this would be no big deal. I imagine that everyone blogs. But for us 40-somethings–or for at least this 40-something–this is a leap into the unknown. I have visited an embarrassingly few blogs, and even those only sporadically. I do have a friend whose blog I follow but she’s 30-something so maybe that doesn’t count. I like what I’ve stumbled upon and have been sent to gems through magazine references but therein may lie the problem. I am a magazine girl at heart. My professional career centered around stints at New York magazine, Conde Nast Traveler and Men’s Journal. I loved magazines ever since devouring my first issue of Seventeen (I only tore pictures of Scott Baio from Tiger Beat; never a loyal reader). But magazines became my life as I lived, worked and breathed them in New York City in the 90s. As I see it, there’s no better career for a girl in New York. You work hard, basically you’re a slave, but a decently paid, handsomely rewarded one at that. You make fabulous friends, visit even more fabulous places and rack up experiences at every turn. It’s a great life, one that I remember very fondly.
My life is different now. No longer in New York City. Married, with three kids and a very large dog. And toying with the idea of re-entering the “real world.” I love what I have and I don’t want to give up the luxuries, joys, annoyances of being a stay-at-home mom. But I know that there is more I could contribute. Should contribute.
So this is my first step. One small step for your average 20-something, one large step for this “okay, if I do say myself” 40-something. I’m going to think out loud here. See where it takes me. Drop my pen and paper and dip my toe into the blogosphere. And maybe, just maybe, one day share my posts with my friends and even the world. Now that is exciting!
